The European Day of Languages will bring a diverse programme celebrating Europe’s linguistic and cultural diversity to Helsinki Central Library Oodi. This annual initiative aims to promote language learning and encourage interest in studying foreign languages. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki will also take part, introducing visitors to the Czech language and culture.
The morning and afternoon programme will feature an interactive Language Café for primary and secondary school students. Advance registration is required. Through games, competitions and other activities, students will have the opportunity to explore European languages, meet native speakers and visit stands representing different countries, including Czechia. In addition to the official languages of the European Union, they will also discover Finnish and Finland-Swedish Sign Languages.
The programme will also include a multilingual reading of an excerpt from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by British author Lewis Carroll. The famous story will be read in several European languages, including Czech, and presented in sign languages. The reading is free and open to the public.
